These files are saved in the same place as your original student file, but with the extender '.bk0' to '.bk9' rather than '.er'. The '.bk0' file is the latest backup and the '.bk9' file is the oldest.
Because a lot of teachers are using Primary/Elementary Reports have installed to U3 memory sticks we also added some extra backup paths so that extra copies of your reports would be saved in up to two other locations at the same time - automatically.
The reason we added the extra backup facility is not because we think the U3 memory sticks are unreliable - it's because memory sticks are quite small and can easily be misplaced, lost or damaged.
To enable these extra backups, go to Options and pick Miscellaneous.
To setup the backup path just select "BAK Path" and type the name of the backup path, eg: "X:\Backups\MrsSmith\" - "X:" can be a network drive if you like (if you use a network drive, make sure that each teacher "sees" a separate drive or folder).
The system will automatically use the backup path if it has been set. The system will also create the path if it doesn't exist, to turn this off set the "BAK Path Make" option from "Yes" to "No".
There is a second backup path called "Aux Path", you can set it up the same way as the first - this way up to 3 copies of your work are saved simultaneously.
Important: If you turn "BAK Path Make" off and have set the "BAK Path" to a folder that doesn't exist then that backup will not be made. This is a feature! (see the example below)
Here is an example:
Mrs Smith writes reports using a U3 smart stick. She wants reports to be backed up to a network drive when she is at school, but to her C: drive when she is at home. So...
She sets "BAKPath" to "Z:\Backups\MrsSmith\" and sets "BAK Path Make" to "Off".
She then sets "Aux Path" to "C:\Backups\" and sets "Aux Path Make" to "Off".
At school she creates a folder called "Backups\MrsSmith" on network drive "Z:".
At home she creates a folder called "Backups" on her "C:" drive.
In any event, up to 10 backups are made on her U3 stick - the extra backups are "just in case" she misplaces, loses or damages the stick.
Loading backups is easy - Just go to the 'file' menu, select 'Open backup', select the type of backup you wish to open, finally pick the file from the backup file selector.
